His very recisely observed ortrait of Bavarian life begins with little more than a dislay of the villagers#39; constant ribbing, bawdy humour, continuous gossi, and more than a hint of their slow-wittedness. With the return of a young man, their idle malice and childish clowning, always on the edge of unleasantness, receive some focus: quite without foundation, the lad is victimised as a homosexual. The criling conformity of their ingrained conservatism leads the villagers to reject anything #39;different#39;: a young widow is ostracised, more for her criled lover and idiot son than her morals; a teacher is frozen out because she#39;s educated; the casual destruction of the young #39;homosexual#39; is given no more thought than the cutting u of a ig. Not Germany in the #39;30s but the #39;70s; nevertheless the olitical arallels are clear. An imressive film.
